Meal Prep with a Toddler
We’ve been meal prepping since we moved in together way back when we were young 20-somethings. It ranged through the years from simply planning our weekly menus to spending a Sunday morning elbows deep in ground turkey, but when we became parents meal prepping became essential so as not to eat at 9pm.
When Dylan was a baby we powered through it during her morning nap or we plopped her down on a mat in the kitchen with some toys. As she got older we tried to involve her since she was awake. We’d let her smell the spices and other ingredients, telling her what they were. Then when she started walking we would ask her to bring us ingredients from the pantry.
Now that she is almost two, she has been asking to help. So much so that if I start a dish without her she will come running over asking for her “ladder” to be able to see. (Right now, we are using a little step stool but I am searching for a learning tower so that it’s safer.)
Do things go a little bit slower? Yes. But I love that she is so excited to cook with us. Now if only I could teach her how to clean the dishes too.
